Internet Rumors About Dogs: Truth from Fiction (from AKC)

Thanks to the Web, information and misinformation is spreading faster than ever before. Anyone with an internet connection and an email address is susceptible to a daily bombardment of news flashes, hoaxes, gossip, rumors, and urban legends, and it’s often difficult to discern what’s believable and what should be immediately dumped into your inbox’s “Trash.”

Information about dogs, both dubious and credible, is circulating around the internet along with stories about gas boycotts, terrorist threats, and get-rich-quick schemes. We’ve tracked down and dissected some of the most common “rumors” about products which may endanger your dog’s health, and gone straight to the source to bring you the truth.

The Rumor: Febreeze Fabric Spray is Harmful to Dogs

Perhaps the original internet rumor regarding a threat to pets’ health involved Febreeze Fabric Spray. The fabric refresher spray was introduced in the late 1990’s; in December, 1998, it became the subject of alarming emails forwarded to thousands of people. The original email, from an unknown source, claimed that “multiple” dogs and cats had become ill, some fatally, after their owners used Febreeze in their homes or directly on the pets’ bedding or living area. The email blamed the deaths on two components of the spray: zinc chloride and aerosol propellants.

In fact, Febreeze contains neither zinc chloride nor aerosol propellants (it’s a pump, not a spray). Like most cleaning products, it was extensively tested for safety concerns before its release to the public. A consensus of veterinarians, scientists, and toxicologists have concluded that Febreeze, when used as directed, is safe to use around dogs and cats.

Rumor: Swiffer Wet Jet is Harmful to Dogs

As the Febreeze scare died down, another rumor regarding cleaning products sprang up to take its place. In 2004, a widely circulated email stated that a German Shepherd Dog and two cats died of liver failure after their owner cleaned his floor with the Swiffer Wet Jet. The email further claimed that the owner’s investigation into his pets’ deaths revealed that the Wet Jet cleanser contained antifreeze, which was ingested by the pets after they crossed the wet floor and then licked their paws.

In fact, the Wet Jet cleanser does not contain ingredients that are harmful to pets. According to the manufacturer, Proctor and Gamble, the cleanser is composed mostly of water, with a 1-4 % addition of propylene glycol n-propyl ether and isopropyl alcohol. The dangerous compound in antifreeze is ethylene glycol; proplyene glycol is categorized as “generally recognized as safe” by the FDA. Further, the Wet Jet manufacturers state that it is specially formulated to dry without leaving a residue, making it a good choice for pet owners.
Of course, dog owners should decide for themselves which cleaning products they are comfortable using in their homes, and use all products with care around their dogs. It goes without saying that all cleaning products should be kept out of reach of curious canines.

Rumor: Grapes are Harmful for Dogs

In 2004, another “Warning to Dog Owners” began circulating. This one claimed that grapes and raisins can cause renal failure in canines.

The story was quickly picked up by a number of veterinary and general-interest news sites—and as it turns out, it, too, is true. Dogs can become fatally ill after ingesting grapes and raisins. In some dogs, as few as seven raisins brought on symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and shaking. The fruits can cause the kidneys to shut down, and often, even aggressive treatment is unsuccessful.

No one is sure why grapes and raisins cause this reaction in dogs. All dog owners should refrain from feeding grapes and raisins as treats to their dogs, and keep them well out of reach. If you suspect your dog has ingested grapes, or if he starts showing symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

No doubt the coming months will see a new crop of mass email warnings and rumors about products, food stuffs, and practices that are harmful for dogs. If you hear something “through the grapevine” that causes concern, we suggest going straight to the source. If it’s a man-made product that’s rumored to cause harm, contact the manufacturer with your questions. For natural products, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison control center. And, of course, use prevention—such as keeping questionable products away from your dogs—as a cure, and common sense as a guide.

A Word from the President

I would like to thank all of the officers and Board members who made our last show such a success. It is onlybecause of the hard work and dedication of all the members that our show went so well. I would like to give a special thanks to Renee’ and Judie for all their hard work even though they are both battling physical challenges!

I have heard from many attendees about how good the lunch was and how much they appreciated WSCSC’s hospitality. Thanks for all the great food!

Our Wednesday, May 4, 2005 meeting will be held at the Denny’s Restaurant in Puyallup. Dinner will start @ 6:30 PM with our meeting to follow.  We will be completing unfinished business from our Annual Meeting last month.  We need to elect our Show Committee and vote for our next judges.  The show committee is scheduled to meet and bring their recommendations for judges to this meeting.

We also need to formulate plans for the upcoming Canine Festival.

This Festival will be an excellent opportunity to showcase our breed and answer questions about owning, grooming, training, showing and breeding Cocker Spaniels. Since the loss of the World of Dogs at the Puyallup Fair, we have not had another good venue for Public Education as a club.

Come and bring your ideas and suggestions for this Canine Festival.

The 3rd Annual Canine Festival is being held Saturday & Sunday,

June 18 – 19, 2005. The time is 9 AM to 5 PM at Sand Point Magnuson Park in Seattle.

The festival will include 3 International Dog Shows, All Breed Fun Match

Specialty Breed Matches ( we can have a Cocker Match if we like) Junior Showmanship, CGC Canine Good Citizen Test, Obedience Run Through Microchipping, Breed Booths, Vendor Booths, Free Seminars and Demonstrations.

A Word from your President

We can make a difference!
I am reminded of the story of the two young boys who were walking along the ocean beach following a storm with particularly high tides. There were hundred of starfish stranded too far from the ocean edge to make it back to the safety of the ocean.   As they walked along, one of the boys would stop whenever they came to one of the stranded starfish, pick it up and throw it back to the safety of the sea.   His companion questioned why he would bother since there were so many of them and there was no way he could save them all.  What difference was his effort making?
The boy throwing the starfish back into the ocean, agreed that in the whole scope of the problem what he was doing didn’t seem that significant, except to the starfish that he had rescue and thrown back into the water.  To each starfish that he had rescued and thrown back into the ocean, it meant a chance to live, to see another day. To that starfish, the boys efforts made all the difference in the world!

This June we have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our Cocker Spaniels and the people who will own them in the future.     Collectively and individually we can share a wealth of knowledge about breeding, training and caring for one of the most loyal and loving breeds known to mankind.  There is good reason why Cocker Spaniels have been the most popular breed for longer than any other. It is our responsibility as breeders and owners to insure that this legacy of wonderful, loving companions is preserved for future generations.

SIRIUS ABOUT DOGS is hosting their third annual Canine Festival.
We have the opportunity to provide an educational booth for Cocker Spaniels at this event as well as holding a match or Potluck or Agility trial.
Reserve June 18 and 19 for a FUN DAY at the CANINE FESTIVAL. There will be breed booths, fun match, educational seminars and the Canine Good Citizen tests. Bring you dogs out for a fun day to socialize and play doggie games. We are only limited by lack of ideas and volunteers.

All final preparations are in place for our upcoming Specialty Show.

The Board meeting held in the first week of March was very well attended and was able to finalize the show details.
Our next meeting, Wednesday, April 6, 2005 will be the annual elections. Be sure to attend and express your views and ideas. The meeting will be held at the Denny’s Restaurant at the South Hill Mall area of Puyallup, starting at 6:30 p.m.

  Best wishes to all,

  Darlene Mattson

Water Saving Tips

In the Home:

• Take showers of 2 minutes or less. Run water only for wetting down and rinsing.

• Minimize rinsing before using dishwasher.

• Run only full loads in dishwasher and (clothes) washing machine.

• Use appropriate water-level setting on an automatic washer.

• Wash dishes by hand in a sink or a dishpan.

• Rinse or wash fruits and vegetables in sink water.

• Use the garbage disposal as efficiently as possible.

• Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator.

• Loosen ice cubes by removing the trays a few minutes before they are needed.

• Keep a covered container for cool drinking water in the refrigerator.

• Repair faucets and toilets promptly.

• Clean sidewalk, driveway, and patio with a broom rather than by hosing off.

• Use a bucket for soapy wash water and rinse quickly with a hose when washing house windows or a car.

• Save bath, shower, and laundry water for toilet flushing if water is in extremely short supply.

• Prevent children from playing with water.

In the Garden

• Use a high-pressure, low-volume, pistol-grip hose nozzle.

• Plant hardy varieties of grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers that require minimum water. Native plants are best suited to our climate.

• Remove weeds and other moisture competitors.

• Sprinkle in calm, cool weather.

•Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation losses. An occasional, ample watering is more effective than numerous, superficial waterings.

• Use trickle or drip irrigation systems for watering trees, shrubs, hilly areas, or widely spaced plants.

• Before using “gray” waste from tubs, basins, and laundry for lawns, call your health department or district for local restrictions. This use is not allowed in many areas of Washington state.   If use is allowed, distribute uniformly. Use detergents and chemicals sparingly. Sprinkle lawn lightly with clean water to rinse soap film from leaves.

• Collect runoff from roofs and paved areas for garden use.

• Use surface mulch around trees, shrubs, flowers, and garden crops to reduce evaporation loss.

• Replace some lawn with gravel, stone, bark, or paving.

Common sense and an active concern to save water reduce consumption markedly without sacrificing cleanliness or interfering with your lifestyle.

Article - Scientists Reverse Paralysis in Dog

by Rich Callahan, Associated Press Writer

Indianapolis - Dogs with paralyzed hind legs regained the ability to walk after getting a shot of a chemical cousin of antifreeze that helped repair nerve cells in their damaged spinal cords, scientists reports.
Purdue University researchers show led the project hope the approach can soon be tried in people, but caution that there are significant differences between human and canine spinal cords.
The treatment only worked on dogs given the injections within about three days of their injury.  Some dogs not given the injections eventually walked again, but those getting the new treatment had a dramatically higher recovery rate.
In one case, a dachshund named Oscar was initially sent home with a wheel cart and little hop of recovery after a serious injury.  Soon after the dog got the chemical treatment, he began walking, although his back legs work in unison, giving him and unusual gait.
"I used to make fun of him, saying he walks like a drunken sailor," said Oscar's owner, Dan Paulin of Boonville, IN.  "I don't think he'll ever be normal, but at least he's not confined to the wheel cart."
In the study, 19 paraplegic dogs were injected with polyethylene glycol, or PEG - a nontoxic liquid polymer composed of long strings of the same type of molecules found in antifreeze.  Within eight weeks, 13 of the 19 canines, about 68 percent, regained the use of their hind legs and were able to walk, some almost as well as before their injury.
The dogs were injected twice with PEG, first soon after their owners brought them to the researchers' labs and then after standard surgery and steroids to reduce inflammation.  Among a group of 24 dogs that received just the standard surgery and rehabilitation therapies, only about 25 percent regained the same level of mobility, feeling and bodily functions, with about 62 percent remaining paraplegic.
The study's findings appear in the December issue of Journal of Neurotrauma.  Scientists at Purdue, Indiana University's Indianapolis campus and Texas A&M University took part in the research on dogs ages 2 to 8 between 2001-03.  Richard Borgens, the Purdue professor of neuroscience who oversaw the study, was his West Lafayette, IN. lab had previously used PEG to repair damaged spinal cords in guinea pigs with about a 90 percent success rate.  His team has even fused severed guinea pig spinal cords using PEG, although the dogs in the study had spinal disc ruptures that crushed, but did not sever, their spinal cords.
Although exactly how PEG works remains unclear, Borgens said it appears to act as a sort of 'molecular Band-Aid' that forms a temporary seal over breached in nerve cells in the spinal cord, aiding their healing process.  "This stuff is kind of like a radiator stop-leak for the nervous system.  The polymer spreads out and forms a seal over the damaged areas in the nerve cells and allows the membrane below to reconstruct itself," said Borgens, director of Purdue's Center for Paralysis Research.
He said PEG also appears to prevent secondary tissue death that often causes more damage than the original injury.  Borgens said the agent only covers the damaged cells and tissues when injected in the blood stream.  Purdue has enlisted a yet-to-be-announced corporate sponsor that will make PEG in a form suitable for human clinical trials.  Pending federal approval, Borgens hopes those trials can begin within 18 months on people with hours-old or days-old spinal injuries.
W. Dalton Dietrich, the scientific director of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, said the rapid improvements in the dogs are intriguing, but point to the need for follow-up work to learn more about how PEG works and evaluate its safety.  "Although the results are very provocative, additional studies are required," he said.  Karen Kline, an associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames, Iowa, called the findings promising.  She said PEG, which she plans to test on dogs at her lab, appears to stabilize damaged tissue to allow more rapid healing than typically occurs naturally.  "It has such promise, but I think we need to look at more animals and make sure that we're getting a positive outcome," Kline said.
